Overland Travel and Exploration

The rules described below are excerpted from Ultimate Campaign (p. 154-159) but are not repeated here in their entirety. Players are encouraged to read the rules printed there or here (Exploration and Movement) as well.

Large tracts of overland territory are measured in 12 mile hexes. Upon entering a hex, PCs must decide whether to simply travel across the area or to explore it fully (see Encounter Sites). To determine how long it takes the PCs to travel through a hex or to fully explore it, their speed is determined and the tables below are consulted. These tables assume territory without roads or trails and thus trackless. In some hexes, more than one terrain is present. In such cases, travel time is calculated according to the dominant terrain type.

A day represents 8 hours of actual travel time.

Random Encounters
As PCs enter uncharted wilderness, they can experience random encounters in addition to discovering encounter sites, regardless of whether they are simply traveling or exploring. Each day and/or night of travel, exploration, or camping brings a chance of a random encounter (depending on the area and possible PC precautions).

Rewards of Exploration
Exploration of a hex includes accurately mapping it, recording its features, determining its resources, and discovering any possible Encounter Sites. With each hex of wilderness terrain fully explored, a party earns 100 experience points. This award may be increased under special circumstances.
